On the morning after Hurricane Otis (Category 5) tore through, the Barrera family realized there was nothing left. The palapa that roofed their restaurant and bar on the beach of Pie de la Cuesta—a coastal village north of Acapulco Bay—had vanished entirely. In the months that followed, they waited: for the census of victims, for aid, for schools to reopen, and for someone to talk to about the night of October 25th.
Two months after Otis, they considered themselves lucky because they were able to celebrate Christmas Eve. Not only that, but they were also able to host a family of tourists for dinner on the beach, generating a small income. When the clock struck midnight, they sang to the Niño Dios.

Dos navidades en Acapulco
La mañana tras el paso del huracán Otis (categoría 5), la familia Barrera se dio cuenta que no quedaba nada. La palapa que daba techo a su restaurante bar en la playa de Pie de la Cuesta (población costera al norte de la bahía de Acapulco) había desaparecido por completo. En los meses siguientes esperaron que llegaran los censos de damnificados, la ayuda, que reabrieran las escuelas y tener alguien con quién hablar de la noche del 25 de octubre.
A dos meses de Otis, se consideraron afortunados porque pudieron festejar Noche Buena. No sólo eso, sino que pudieron recibir a una familia de turistas para cenar en la playa, generando un pequeño ingreso. Al dar las 12 le cantaron al Niño Dios.
